Lena woke when the other side of the bed dipped with what felt like the weight of a giant. She forced one eyelid up and saw Calix looking at her with great concern. His expression was so serious it made her laugh.
And it made her glad he hadnât stayed to wake her up yesterday.
âStop staring, Deputy Dawg. All women look like hell in the morning,â she told him.
Calixâs expression cleared and a grin spread across his face. âYou look beautiful to me, and I like knowing Iâm the reason you look as rumpled as you do.â
âYouâre such a guy,â Lena said, rolling to her side. She purred when Calix cupped her face in his palm. âLeaving for work?â
Calix nodded. âYes. Theo called me. Heâs already gone out to handle something. He wants me there to mind the office.â
Lena giggled. âYou sure are discreet with your cell phone. Iâve never even seen you use it.â
Calix blew out a breath then just said it. Maybe she couldnât yet hear him, but she needed to learn to do so. âDragons in the same family donât need phones. They just think what they want the person to hear. Theo and I speak that way all the time.â
Lena rolled to her back and away from his hand as she sighed. âGreat. Weâre back to the dragon thing again.â
âItâs unavoidable today,â Calix said softly. âBetty brought breakfast for you. I smell it.â
âCan you stay and eat with me?â
âI wish I could. Duty in the form of my insistent cousin means I do not get food this morning.â
âWhat are you doing today?â
âWe will deal with the parents of Nateâs bullies. Topperâs coming.â
âThe purple-haired witch, aka rabbit woman,â Lena said, chuckling. âEvery time I try to sort out what I saw, I feel like Alice in Wonderland.â
âYou feel like Lena in Magic to me.â
Lena pushed herself up and pulled the sheet over her breasts.
Calix stared and then sighed. âYouâre growing more beautiful each time my eyes land on you.â
âI could send that compliment right back,â Lena replied with her own sigh. She waved her hand. âGo to work, Calix. Iâll see you tonight.â
âLena, Iâ¦â
Lena snorted. âAre seriously intending to lock me up this afternoon?â
Calix rose from the bed and nodded. âI must. Itâs for the good of all. I will stay with you until we know what the Fates have planned. Despite my doubts, it is a precaution worth taking. Perhaps nothing will happen. If tonight passes without you changingâ¦â He shrugged. âLet us hope you remain your true self. We can put this behind us then and discuss a reasonable future.â
Lena inspected her arms. Her rash and the attack on her last evening both still seemed too surreal to believe. So did making love to Calix last night. The dream of flying she had was nice though.
âI have to be honest with you, Deputy Dawg. I havenât ruled out tht peyote in the pie theory yet.â
Calix laughed. âYour persistence is both your worst quality and what made me fall in love with you.
